Materials like pig iron and stones are impossible to handle with normal clamshell grabs.
The penetration resistance is just too high. Orange peel grabs can be a good solution.
Verstegen orange peel grabs are normally equipped with 6 or 8 tines (claws), so all penetration and closing force of the grab is concentrated on these 6 or 8 small points. In combination with the 5-fold rope reeving this results in extreme high grabbing forces.
The shape of the scales is optimised so the material can move upwards during the closing. To minimise the risk of material loss the openings between the scales is relative small.
The complete scales of a Verstegen orange peel grab are made of Hardox steel. For handling stones extra manganese wear profiles can be welded to protect the side of the scoop plates.
For stones and small pig iron (up to 250 mm) trimming grabs can be a good alternative.
