Verstegen - Winner of the IBJ Award for Best Grab
Verstegen is the winner of the first IBJ Award for Best Grab.
The ceremony was held on the evening of 23rd November 2009,
in the Beurs van Berlage - former Amsterdam Stock Exchange building.
The large advantages of the Verstegen grabs were recognised by a large international panel of judges.

Market leader in rope operated grabs
Verstegen is the worlds leading manufacturers of rope operated mechanical grabs for the dry bulk industry. Since the foundation in 1951 Verstegen delivered over 10.000 grabs to customers in 83 countries worldwide.
Leading crane manufacturers (Ardelt, Gottwald, Liebherr) equip their cranes with Verstegen grabs to guarantee the highest unloading rates.
Optimised grabs
Verstegen is specialised in designing and building rope operated mechanical grabs. We continuously work to develop the most efficient and cost-effective grabs by using 3D designs and FEM analyses. We aim to optimise every grab for the specific unloading situation and customer wishes. The upper structure of each Verstegen grab is adjusted to the crane it has to work on. The shells of each Verstegen grab are optimised for the bulk materials to be handled.
High capacities and low dead weights
Achieving high unloading rates is the most important condition for a customer who handles bulk materials. Fast and efficient unloading results in operational and demurrage costs savings. In order to obtain the highest productive capacity, a grab should have the highest possible volume without unnecessary dead weight. This is only possible with a good and well proven design in combination with using of the best possible materials.

Large resistance against wear and deformation
Verstegen grabs are build from first class materials. The complete shells of all Verstegen grabs (cutting edges as well as shell plates) are made from wear resistant Hardox steel. Hardox steel is 2 to 3 times stronger than normal construction steel.

The wear resistance is even 4 times higher than common used steels. Hardox (from SSAB, Sweden) is
worldwide known as the best steel for making light and strong designs with extreme wear protection.
Hardox combines exceptionally high hardness with extremely high toughness. The use of Hardox and Weldox makes it possible to build grabs with a high capacity and low dead weight. Despite the low dead weight, Verstegen grabs are extreme strong and have a long lifetime and very low costs of ownership.
High enclosed environmentally friendly grabs
In order to prevent material loss and pollution of the environment more and more customers choose high enclosed grabs. The Verstegen enclosed model has become the most popular grab for light and medium bulk materials, like coal, fertiliser and agribulk. But also for phosphates, sulphur and sugar the grab is working successful.
The model combines a high capacity with high strength and durability. The enclosed shells and good sealing system minimise material loss and environmental pollution. The grab is “round-shaped” and has no sharp edges so there will be less damage to ships in case of collisions. The cutting edges are provided with round corners to minimise damage to the ship hold.The corners of the grab shells have extra protection plates to increase the strength and protect the welds between the side plates and the back plates. Strong triangular arm structures with built-in ladders assure an easy access to the grab head. The holding rope balance is protected by heavy plates to prevent damage.
Optionally the upper structure can be provided with a central greasing system. The system connects all greasing points of the grab upper part to one central greasing point at the inner side of the arms. The safety of the operational people is increased, because they don’t have to climb the grab. Further the system saves a lot of time because fifteen greasing points are connected to one central point.
Grabs for mobile harbour cranes
Verstegen is world market leader in rope grabs for mobile harbour cranes (Gottwald and Liebherr). The best sold grabs for these cranes are the Verstegen enclosed models grabs because they offer high production rates and are extremely reliable.
A large number were delivered with new cranes but there were also many (other make) grabs replaced to reduce maintenance costs and increase reliability.
